Selling is More Than Taking an Order

Sales professionals don’t just take orders!  That is merely serving a customer.  Although there is nothing wrong with taking orders, it in no way means you sold anything. 

Lately, I’ve had discussions with salespeople who spend their day doing nothing more than taking orders from people who want to place an order.   True sales professionals help people fill their needs, they help develop solutions the customer hasn’t thought of before, and they inspire their customers to reach a higher personal or business level. 

Next time you find yourself taking an order without asking the customer questions that will help you assist them, be mindful of the fact that you’re doing an injustice to both you and your employer.  More importantly, you shouldn’t expect to be paid at the level of a salesperson, because you’re not.
