Phone Sales Tips: Who Cares About the Weather

I’m tired of listening to salespeople who call me asking if I’m freezing. Using a question about the weather to start a conversation with somebody you don’t know is pretty lame. Not only is it lame for somebody who lives in Nebraska, but it also gets pretty old. Honestly, it gets cold in Nebraska every winter. When you’re talking to someone you don’t know, lay off the questions about weather. For that matter, might as well lay off weather questions with people you do know.

As for me, the next time someone calls me and asks about the weather in Nebraska, I’m going to tell them it’s great. It’s a perfect 70 degrees… in my office.

Whether your weather is cold or hot, mild or out of control, be sure to go out and make the most of every day in 2010! It’s going to be a great year!

  1. Agree. Ciche’ questions as an “ice breaker” when prospecting really detract from the intent of the call. We should all know that prospects (and customers for that matter) hate this kind of trivia.
