Anyone can cut a price. Free is easy to sell. But if you’re relying on discounts to close deals, you’re saying, “I can’t sell.”
You’ll want to avoid these seven hidden dangers of discounting, especially as we head into the fourth quarter.

1. Attracts the wrong customers
When you discount, you attract the wrong type of customer—the kind who can’t or won’t pay full price.
These customers never deliver full margin, and worse, they expect discounts every time. Once you lower the price, that becomes their new definition of value. Don’t fool yourself into thinking you can raise the price next time—they’ll expect the deal again.
2. Weakens your selling skills
Discounting doesn’t just hurt your profits; it hurts your ability to sell. It makes you dependent on price instead of skill. Great salespeople don’t lead with a discount—they lead with questions, understanding, and insight.
Your selling skills are about listening, identifying real needs, and knowing your ICP (ideal customer profile). When you take the time to understand the customer deeply, you don’t need to cut the price—you can sell at full value with confidence.

3. Discounting is a mindset
Discounting doesn’t just happen on paper—it happens in your head. Once you start doing it, it becomes a habit. You begin believing that every deal needs a discount to close.
I’ve seen this happen across sales teams. That’s why I tell salespeople to mentally raise their price by 20%. Own that higher price. Believe in it. When you confidently present your real price, it feels like a bargain to the customer—and you stay in control of the sale.
4. Lowers your value prop
When you discount, you send a message that undercuts your entire value proposition. You’re telling the customer, “What I offer isn’t worth full price.”
If your product or service truly delivers the results you claim—why would you lower the price? When you do, the customer starts to question everything. They wonder, “If it’s really that good, why are they discounting?” Suddenly, your credibility takes a hit.
5. Discounts never go away
Here’s the truth—discounts never disappear. Once a customer sees a lower price, that becomes their permanent reference point. It’s now their version of “normal.”
From that point on, you’re stuck. You’ve trained the customer to wait for the next discount, and your profit margins are permanently damaged. You’ve built a treadmill of lower returns that’s nearly impossible to step off.

6. Failing to see the real value
Discounting blinds both you and the customer to the real value of what you offer. The customer starts focusing on price instead of outcomes, and you start focusing on the transaction instead of the transformation.
Never quote a price until you fully understand what the customer truly needs. When you sell on value—not price—you build trust, confidence, and long-term relationships.
7. Creates a race to the bottom
Finally, when you start discounting, your competitors will notice—and they’ll follow. Before long, everyone is cutting prices just to stay competitive. That’s not a strategy; that’s a race to the bottom.
Nobody wins in that race. The only way to win is by selling on value. Take the time to understand your customers, communicate your worth, and stand firm on your price.
