As we head into the new year, ask yourself: Are you ready to be one of the top performers in your company? Whether you’ve been a top performer in the past or you’re striving to become one, it’s essential to master the right habits to stay on top.
In this post, I’ll challenge you with five essential strategies that will help you elevate your performance in the new year. Whether you’re already a high performer or just starting, these tips are crucial for everyone who wants to succeed in sales.
1. Say No to Distractions: Focus on What Matters
Top performers know the importance of saying no. They don’t get swayed by shiny objects or new ideas that don’t align with their goals. Saying no means staying tight on your objectives and avoiding tasks or requests that won’t move you closer to your goals.
Why saying no matters: Constantly responding to every request or chasing after new ideas can derail your focus. That’s right, saying no can even mean slowing down your response time.
Top sales performers maintain their discipline by saying no to low-priority tasks. Don’t get caught up in playing customer service. Leave customer service duties to the appropriate team members. Instead, focus on high-value activities that contribute to your success.
2. Filter the Voices Around You: Stay Positive
Sales is an emotional game, and the voices you hear—both internal and external—play a huge role in determining your performance. Negative voices can drag you down, but positive voices will drive you forward.
Surround yourself with top performers: Top salespeople align themselves with other high achievers who challenge them to perform better. Top performers are quick to align themselves with other top performers; it’s a competitive thing because they know they challenge each other and they wind up going to a higher level.
They ensure they are constantly surrounded by positivity, whether through mentors, colleagues, or networks of successful professionals. This positive influence is critical for maintaining a high level of performance.
3. Stay Laser-Focused on Your Ideal Customer Profile (ICP)
Top performers are incredibly focused. They know who their ideal customers are and never lose sight of that. Having a clear Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) allows them to avoid wasting time on leads that aren’t a good fit.

How to stay focused: To remain focused, you need to have a clear plan for each week, month, and quarter. Ask yourself: What is your objective for the week? What’s the outcome you want from each sales call or meeting? By reviewing your goals daily and keeping track of your progress, you stay on target and avoid distractions.
4. Discipline is Key: Consistency Over Perfection
Top performers are incredibly disciplined. They stick to routines and do what works consistently, even if it feels “boring.” This level of discipline is what separates high achievers from the rest.
Why discipline matters: If you want to succeed, you need to develop reliable habits and routines. Top performers might lead seemingly “boring” lives because they focus on consistent actions that deliver results. Whether it’s making prospecting calls at the same time every day or following a specific email cadence, consistency is critical to success.
5. Repetition: Build Scalable Systems
One of the key factors to sustained success is repetition. Top performers don’t create anything that can’t be repeated, and this is the key to being able to scale over time. This includes everything from sales prospecting emails to follow-up calls. Creating everything from scratch might feel good, but will slow you down.
The power of repetition: By creating repeatable systems, you ensure that every part of your sales process is efficient and can be replicated. This allows you to scale your efforts without reinventing the wheel every time. A well-defined sales cadence makes your outreach predictable, helping you engage with prospects more effectively and consistently.
