It happens in nearly every sales conversation. The customer asks about a discount, and you feel the pressure to bend. But let’s cut to the truth: your customer isn’t always looking for a better deal, rather they’re testing your confidence.
They want to know if you stand behind your price and your solution. Sales success comes from holding the line and projecting real belief in what you sell. Here’s how to stay in control when those discount demands come your way.
Confidence Protects Margin
Your confidence speaks louder than any words on a price tag. Buyers sense when you truly believe in your price, and when you don’t. If they see a gap in your conviction, they’ll push harder for concessions.
Confidence isn’t arrogance. It’s a clear signal to your customer that your offer is worth every penny.
Don’t Negotiate Against Yourself
The single biggest mistake in price conversations is negotiating before the customer even asks. Salespeople often offer discounts just because they’re nervous about objections. That’s backwards thinking. Go in with the mindset that your price delivers more value than it costs. Hold strong. If you can’t stand by your price, why should your customer?
Pause Before You Respond
A knee-jerk reaction sends the wrong message. When buyers challenge your price, don’t rush to defend or explain. Take a moment. Pause.
This short beat communicates control and confidence. You stay in the driver’s seat, not your customer.
Ask: “Compared to What?”
When a customer tells you your price is too high, dig deeper. Ask, “Compared to what?” Most of the time, buyers throw out price objections with nothing specific in mind. Find out what, if anything, they’re actually comparing you to. Never adjust your price without understanding the real context.
Return to the Business Outcome
Shift the focus from price to value. Remind your customer of the problem you’re solving, not just the number on the invoice. Re-center the discussion on the business outcome you deliver. Customers buy solutions, not discounts. Anchor your price to the results only you can provide.
Price Pressure Can Be a Habit
Discount requests are often a reflex. Some buyers haggle because it’s worked for them in the past. The sales world has trained them to expect an easy “yes” to discounting. Don’t fall for it.
Just because a customer asks doesn’t mean there’s a real issue with your price. Stand firm unless there’s a compelling reason to reconsider.
Never Give, Always Trade
If you find yourself needing to reduce your price, never do it without taking something off the table. Give up features, benefits, or services in exchange. When you make a concession, make sure you get something back. Otherwise, you signal your price is always negotiable, thus setting yourself up for the same ask again and again.
Your Confidence Becomes Their Confidence
Confidence isn’t just about you. It’s contagious. The more clearly you believe in your solution and its value, the more your customer will believe, too. Selling isn’t about being the cheapest. It’s about being the solution your customer trusts to deliver real results.
Hold that line. Defend your value every single time. Your margins and your customers will thank you for it.
