Too many salespeople avoid the tough questions. They’re afraid of putting the customer on the spot or digging too deep, so they play it safe. The trouble is, that’s how you end up chasing leads that go nowhere.
If you want real results, you need to embrace the power of smart questioning. The right questions not only build trust, they reveal what your customer truly cares about. And guess what? The quicker you get to the heart of the issue, the faster you’ll win or move on.
Here are six prospecting questions every honest, high-integrity sales professional needs in their toolkit. Check back next week for 6 MORE questions.
1. What are your top priorities?
Don’t leave this one in your back pocket. Start the conversation by asking, “What are your top priorities?” Most customers are only solving one or two critical issues at a time. If your solution doesn’t line up with those, your deal won’t get done.
It’s that simple. You’re after the real pain points, not the side projects. Get laser-focused on what actually matters to your prospect.
2. What is holding you back?
Once you understand their priorities, dig deeper. Ask, “What’s holding you back?” This question opens them up. You’ll hear what’s working, what isn’t, and where the real roadblocks are.
Let the conversation flow. You’re not there to talk over them. Listen, ask follow-ups, and earn their trust. Remember, strong relationships begin where honest answers are found.

3. How are you currently dealing with these issues?
Now it’s time to probe their solutions. “How are you currently dealing with these issues?” Forces them to examine what’s not working and shows where change is needed.
People will share the journey they’ve been on, and you get a window into what’s failed and what’s worked. This builds your credibility as someone who wants to solve, not just sell.
4. What changes are you seeing with your customers?
Stand out from every other salesperson. Ask them, “What changes are you seeing with your customers?” This shows you care about their world, not just your commission.
Most sales professionals miss this one entirely. But understanding how their customers are evolving reveals a ton—both about their business and how you can serve them.

5. Where do you see your industry going?
This question is about vision. It gives you instant insight into how plugged-in your contact really is. If they brush it off, you know they may not be the strategic force you’re hoping for.
But if they light up and start talking about trends, competitors, and big moves, you know you’re speaking with someone who gets the bigger picture.
6. What big obstacles stand in the way of making your annual plan?
Finally, go straight to the heart of the matter: “What are the big obstacles standing in the way of making your annual plan?” This isn’t a throwaway question. It’s tough, but it’s essential.
Sometimes prospects won’t give you everything right away. That’s okay. The more you ask questions like this, the more you prove you’re more than a salesperson—you’re a trusted advisor. In fact, when you start hearing things that require a nondisclosure agreement, that’s when you know you’re making progress.
Don’t Be Afraid to Get Real
The questions above don’t just reveal information. They build trust and confidence on both sides. Don’t let fear of tough questions cost you deals. Ask with integrity. Listen with interest. Move forward with confidence.
