Here’s a news flash for you:  The news SUCKS!

Yup… that’s right… the news sucks.  And you need to ignore it or it will decimate your sales motivation.

It’s time for me to yell at everyone again to quit paying attention to the news and especially the news about the economy.

There’s no way anyone can pay attention to the news on the economy and not find themselves being sucked down into a spiral of discouragement, depression and decreased sales!

In sales, our job is to lead.

That means we need to be positive influencers on the people we meet.  To do this we have to be positive ourselves. I’m sorry, but I know in my own case, I can’t spend any amount of time reading the news without becoming depressed about it.

The news on jobs, debt, politics and the economy is not exactly the positive stuff we need to be reading. The option then is to not read it. Ignore it!  Yes, ignore it!

If you are going to make the sales of which you are capable, then you need to get on about doing it!

By the way, if you’re wondering how I feel about the economy, I’ll tell you.  I firmly believe we will recover and have a huge period of economic prosperity as a nation and in the world.

I’m bullish, I’m positive and yes, I’m in sales.

Why do I say this? It’s simple. Everything goes in cycles — nothing continues as a straight-line.   Each straight-line eventually becomes a bended curve and our economy will move forward.   The neatest thing about all of this is we won’t even realize it’s better until it is better!  That is what I’m counting on and that’s what I’m selling towards.

If you still doubt me, then you’re probably under the age of 40 and can’t remember bad economic periods.

I’m not old enough to remember the Great Depression and WWII, but you know what — we came through those periods.  Innovation eventually grew, profits grew and jobs grew.  During those two periods, though, many people felt we as a country would never recover and we were doomed.

Yes, we incurred significant losses, including the lives of many people and we can’t put a price tag on that kind of loss.  However, despite all of the losses and despair, we as a country triumphed.  In fact, we came through both periods even stronger.

I believe that will be the case this time too.

So, stop listening to the news.  The news sucks.

Instead, go out and sell and grow not only your bottom line, but also your sales motivation and your selling skills.
