We all know today marks the anniversary of 9/11. I want to share some thoughts with you regarding this pivotal day in history and where we find ourselves today in the midst of the COVID pandemic, social change, political campaigns, economic pressures, and more.

I still remember the morning of 9/11. I had returned home for a brief moment after meeting a few people for breakfast. I found my wife glued to the TV watching was had just happened as she was getting the kids off to school.

Then, I remember seeing it live on television – the second plane crashing into the second tower. It really hit home because even though we lived in Omaha at the time, we had just recently moved there from New Jersey. The Twin Towers were a place I had been many times for many meetings. I’d looked through the windows, ate at the restaurant, been to the observation deck. It was always I place I frequently often.

In fact, it holds an extra special place in me and my wife’s heart because it was from the payphone in the Marriott Hotel at the base of the World Trade Center where we found out we were expecting our first child. Yeah, that’s really cool. The roots go deep in the New York Tri-State area. Although I didn’t have any personal friends that were lost, I had a number of business acquaintances who I knew distantly that perished and lost families.

Coming out of that day, the world was shaken. We were all shaken. Air travel of course stopped so many things. We all began to question whether or not life would ever be the same again. We questioned whether or not we would be able to fly again. We questioned whether or not we would travel to a big city.

As we reflect on the past 19 years, we came through 9/11. We came back, and we’ve become stronger as a nation because of it. We are stronger as a people. We really came through, just like our ancestors did generations prior with Pearl Harbor and the Great Depression.

Here we are today in the midst of covert social change, black lives matter, economic pressure, political turmoil, and people are questioning whether or not we will ever be the same again. We will. I know we will. Why? Because we are incredibly awesome individuals that make up the United States of America.

I’m proud of my country. Have we made mistakes? Sure, we’ve made mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes, but it’s ok. We’re getting there. It’s all about making it happen and not allowing situations to define us, but rather allowing situations to shape us for the better. That’s how I look at the situations we’re in now, just like we did back with 9/11. Air travel came back. Everything came back. Of course there were changes that took some time, but in the grand scheme of things, it really wasn’t that big of a deal.

Think about COVID and all the other pressures right now the same way. Don’t allow situations to define you, but rather allow situations to shape you for the better. That is how you will succeed. That is how we will succeed as a country. That is what I am looking forward to right now by asking myself, how can I use these current situations to learn form and to improve upon?
